NGC 1300 in Eridanus

This is one of the best barred spiral galaxies in the sky. It is around 61 million lightyears distant and similar in size to our own galaxy, at 110,000 lightyears in diameter. There is a quiescent black hole at the centre of the galaxy, with approx 70 million solar masses – so much larger than the 4-million solar mass black hole at the centre of ours.

This image is the result of 1h 40m of remote data capture from New Mexico, on an evening in October 2021. A Planewave 20-inch CDK reflector was used, with an FLI ProLine PL11002M CCD camera.
