Messier 104 Sombrero Galaxy in Virgo

This spiral galaxy is seen almost edge-on, and is characterised by a prominent dust lane and a massive central bulge. With a diameter of 49,000 lightyears, it is less than half the size of our Milky Way galaxy, and is around 31 million lightyears distant.

The galaxy is too low in the sky as seen from the UK, to image satisfactorily. This LRGB image is the result of just under 2h of remote data capture from New Mexico, using a 20-inch Planewave CDK reflector and FLI Proline PL 11002M camera.
