NGC 3718 in Ursa Major

NGC 3718 is the larger galaxy, a distorted barred spiral around 50 million lightyears distant. Classified as a polar-ring galaxy, a sweeping twisted dust lane crosses the central regions, seen edge-on.

The smaller galaxy to the lower left is NGC 3729, located at a similar distance. There is evidence of interaction between it and the larger galaxy.

To the right of NGC 3718 is the galaxy group Hickson 56, around 400 million lightyears away.

This RGB image is the result of 7h 45m of data capture from Horsham, over eight evenings in February and March 2026. A ZWO ASI2600MM Pro camera was used, through an 8-inch Teleskop-Service Ritchey-Chretien reflector.
