Messier 83 Southern Pinwheel galaxy in Hydra

M83 is a barred spiral galaxy in the southern sky near the border with Centaurus, discovered in 1752. It is around 15 million lightyears distant and approximately 120,000 lightyears in diameter, similar to the size of our own galaxy.

This HaRGB image is the result of 1h 20m of remote data capture from Chile, over two evenings in March 2025. An FLI ML16200 camera was used, through a 20-inch Planewave CDK reflector.
