Messier 35 and NGC 2158 in Gemini

Messier 35 is the open star cluster on the upper left, and is around 3000 lightyears away and 22 lightyears across. The smaller open cluster NGC 2158 towards the bottom right, is unrelated to M35 and approx 9000 lightyears more distant.

The difference in star colour between the two clusters arises from the fact that while M35 is perhaps 110 million year old, NGC 2158 is 2 billion years of age.

This image is a 2-pane joiner, each pane being the result of 2h of RGB data capture, taken over 3 evenings in January 2023 from Horsham. A ZWO ASI2600MM Pro monochrome camera was used, through an 8-inch Teleskop-Service Ritchey-Chretien Cassegrain reflector.
