NGC 4945 in Centaurus

This barred spiral galaxy with prominent dust lanes, is only 13 million lightyears away and 75,000 lightyears in diameter, so around three-quarters of the size of our galaxy.

At the bottom right is the high-velocity star HD 113767, which appears to be associated with some nebulosity. In reality, this star is within our own galaxy and is superimposed on the more distant spiral galaxy NGC 4945A, at a distance of 77 million lightyears.

This LRGB image is the result of 2h of remote data capture from New South Wales, over four evenings in May 2022, using a 17-inch Planewave CDK reflector and FLI Proline PL 16803 camera.
