Sh2-1 in Scorpius

This colourful red emission and blue reflection nebula is powered by the blue-white star Pi Scorpii, to the lower left of centre in this image. The fragmented reflection nebulosity extends 180 degrees around the emission nebulosity surrounding the star.

The nebula is approx 650 lightyears distant and 30 lightyears in diameter, covering around 2.5 degrees of sky.

This LRGBHa image is the result of 1h 50m of data capture from New South Wales over 3 nights in February 2022, remotely imaged using a FLI Microline 16803 camera through a 4-inch Takahashi FSQ Fluorite refractor.
