NGC 1055 in the constellation Cetus

This edge-on barred spiral galaxy is around 52 million lightyears distant and similar in size to our own galaxy, at 115,000 lightyears in diameter. Yet NGC 1055 is a foreground object, when compared to the spiral galaxy showing as a small fleck of light to the lower left of this image. This is undoubtedly hundreds of millions of lightyears away.

NGC 1055 is noteworthy for its exceptionally large central bulge and a prominent complex of dust lanes.

This image is the result of 1h 40m of remote data capture from New Mexico, on an evening in October 2021. A Planewave 20-inch CDK reflector was used, with an FLI ProLine PL11002M CCD camera.
