NGC 1499 California Nebula in Perseus

This emission nebula resembling the shape of the US state of California, is only around 1000 lightyears distant and therefore it appears as a large object spanning 2.5 degrees. This image is of the very centre of the nebula, showing some of the detail. The highly-luminous star Menkib (Xi Persei), that is responsible for this hydrogen emission nebulosity, is out of frame.

This image is the result of 10h of data capture, over 8 evenings stretching from December 2020 to March 2021.
