Messier 87 and Makarian's Chain of galaxies (annotated)

This is the result a of a two-pane joiner to give a field of view of approximately 1.75 degrees square. Only the brightest galaxies were captured, many of which are ellipticals - the aim was not to go particularly deep, but to record only the brightest galaxies - there are approx 35 in the FOV.

M87 is bottom left and the inset image is the result of a separate processing of the original raw image. It shows just a trace of a 5000 lightyear long jet of plasma, being ejected from this elliptical galaxy at close to the speed of light.
